A migraine is defined as; “a recurrent throbbing headache that typically affects one side of the head and is often accompanied by nausea and disturbed vision.” Some of the symptoms include –
- Pain in the face or neck
- Dizziness
- Light headedness
- Sensitivity to light
- Nausea/vomiting
- Distorted vision
The symptoms can be very debilitating, and people will go to just about any lengths to relieve them. Oils, massages, medication, even things like botox, and acupuncture are all things people have tried. While the daith piercing isn’t a new thing, and has been around for 3,000 years, its name was recently coined in the 1990’s. This small piercing at the entrance to the ear canal has gained popularity with recent claims to being a treatment for migraines.
What is a daith piercing?

It’s an ear piercing that passes through the ear’s innermost cartilage fold, which runs through a pressure point. A professional most often performs this kind of piercing in a tattoo shop. While there is little to no research that supports the claim of being a treatment for migraines, many people claim it does work.
How does it work?
The idea behind the daith is that it mimics acupuncture by hitting a pressure point, causing it to relieve the pressure in the client’s head. It’s suggested that you get the piercing done on the side that corresponds with the side your migraines hit. Some also say you should go in to get pierced with a headache/migraine to see if it actually helps. Due to the lack of real research behind this claim, it’s a 50/50 chance of if it will work for you. If it doesn’t, at least you’ll end up with a cute new piercing!
Still on the fence on if you’d benefit from a daith piercing? Here’s a testimonial from one of our VIP clients! Maybe her experience will help you decide if you want to come in for a piercing of your own!
“So back in December I got my left daith pierced due to horrible migraines so bad they confined me to bed and it had to be dark and I could not do anything until it passed and nothing helped and I do mean NOTHING. I went in the tattoo parlor with a migraine and as soon as Tegan pierced it I had instant relief. Then a week or two later I got my right Daith pierced and I am now migraine free for a month and a half and can focus on any and everything now! If they have a piercing for being tired sign me up and let me know. I highly recommend Emerald Tattoo and Piercing for your piercings! They are reasonably priced and make u feel like your at home. Ask for Tegan she makes sure your comfortable first and it goes buy very fast!” -Breana
